Beviamoci Sud – The first festival of the great red wines of Southern Italy, organized in Rome by Riserva Grande – Radisson Blue Hotel.
A short distance from the event dedicated to Nebbiolo, Riserva Grande offered fans another commendable thematic initiative. This time the focus was on the great red wines of Southern Italy.
A rather vast and changeable territory, with a thousand facets, which produces numerous wines of great value and of ever greater diffusion. Just to mention some of the most significant vines we mention Primitivo and Negramaro (or Negroamaro) in Puglia, the Calabrese Gaglioppo, Nerello Mascalese and Nero d’Avola from Sicily, Tintilia inMolise and the different varieties of Aglianico mainly spread in Campania and Basilicata.
And it is precisely to the latter that, having to make a choice on which of the many wines present to taste, we dedicated ourselves on this occasion. With one and equally valid Sicilian exception.
We recently had the opportunity to taste numerous Aglianico wines from Campania (HERE) and for this reason our attention has focused this time on the area of Vulture, in Basilicata, which in recent years has seen a significant increase in both the offer and the quality of products, as well as interest from experts and the market. The volcanic “terroir” of Vulture gives this grape great strength and variety of expressions.
There were 5 wineries with a good choice of labels, all of which are of a very high standard, as you can see from our ratings below. Impossible to remain less than satisfied with each of them.
In addition to the wines from Basilicata, we wanted to taste some other “Sicilian” examples and precisely from the area of Erice (TP), with its variations on the theme “Nerello Mascalese” and “Nero d’Avola”:

Note: The number of tastings at the various producers is exclusively linked to the case and the variations of the moment. For this reason in some cases we taste different wines from a producer and maybe, only one from others. Naturally, we cannot taste them all and therefore also the choice of which producers to test is due exclusively to chance or to our desire to evaluate specific vines or specific locations.
WARNING!
We recommend that you always drink alcohol in moderation and above all, do not drive after doing it.
