Český Krumlov – A Bohemian Jewel

A journey to the UNESCO World Heritage city, in the Czech Republic.

A place not to be missed, located in southern Bohemia, with a fairy tales castle, is Český Krumlov, which literally means the Krumlov of the Czech Republic (or Bohemian) to distinguish it from the homonymous Krumlov which is located in Moravia.
The story begins in the thirteenth century, with the start of the construction of the castle, which in the next century became, together with the village, the property of the Rožmberk family. A noble family, very rich and important that wanted to give a prestigious imprint to his manor. Through the centuries, the Gothic, Renaissance (strongly influenced by Italian influences) and Baroque styles followed one another to form today’s appearance.

The castle strongly characterizes Český Krumlov, given its size (it is second only to that of Prague) almost disproportionate compared to the surrounding area, and its elevated position: impossible not to notice it.
There are numerous points of interest, from the fabulous baroque theater (one of the best preserved in the world), to the gothic undergrounds, to the panoramic tower, which offers a splendid view of the ancient medieval village surrounded by a bend in the Vltava river.

UNESCO World Heritage Site

In 1992, UNESCO has decreed the Castle and the surrounding area as belonging to the World Heritage.
The village is very well preserved and a walk through its narrow streets is the first thing to do after visiting the castle. It will be possible to admire its beauties and discover artisan shops, small museums (among which the Egon Schiele Art Centrum stands out, dedicated to the Austrian artist who stayed long in Český Krumlov). Of course, you can not miss the taste of the excellent local gastronomy and a good Czech beer, perhaps that of the Eggenberg brewery located nearby.
In some periods of the year it is possible to attend many interesting events, such as Carnival, the 5 Petals Rose Festival and the International Music Festival.
Definitely, a destination not to be missed!
